When you think of comfort food what do you think? Lasagne, chocolate, and pizza, all shovelled down on a hungover Sunday along with feelings of self-loathing and guilt.
Après Food is the brand new Clerkenwell café that’s trying redefine comfort food. This is the kind of place you can smugly tell your friends about as the first person to have discovered it (don’t worry, we won’t tell that you heard it here first).
The space itself is homely, warm and peaceful but the food is to. die. for. Après Food don’t want comfort food to compromise on the taste or the nutrition. Yummy? Yes. Affordable? Absolutely. Ethically-sourced? Would we be telling you about it otherwise?
Co-owners Danny Gray and Catherine Sharman are both chefs and Sharman is a nutritional therapist too.
Most of their food comprises organic ingredients, completely free from gluten and refined sugar, and a very limited use of cow’s milk. We tried a peanut-chicken sandwich, served in home-made bread with salad on the side. Fresh and so tasty we had to, yes had to, go back for more.
Next we tried the roasted aubergine and pomegranate salad which was equally as yum. The ingredients are all fresh and perfectly seasoned.
To top it all off you should try the brownie… now I’m not sure about you but when I think of goat’s butter it sends a prolonged shiver down my spine but, trust us when we say that a goat is the last thing you will think of when you eat this. Goat’s butter, coconut sugar, gluten-free baking powder, and raw chocolate have never tasted so good – and healthy (so have five).
With small attention to detail that makes the difference, (the tap water comes fresh with mint leaves and the table is decorated with beautiful fresh flowers) everything you taste will make you fall in love with food again, without feeling guilty.
We can’t rave enough about this place
